Steam Deck / SteamOS (native), Windows

A PC gaming handheld is a small gaming PC with built-in controls. It plays the PC games you already own on Steam and other stores, without needing a desk or a TV.

This guide compares the main PC handhelds you can buy in 2026. It covers the Steam Deck OLED, the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X, the Lenovo Legion Go 2 and Legion Go S, and the MSI Claw 8 AI+. We explain the differences between Windows and SteamOS, what the chips mean, how long the batteries last, and how much each one costs.

How we made this guide: the specs and prices below come from manufacturers and published reviews, all listed in the sources at the bottom. Nobody on our team owns these PC handhelds, so there are no hands-on claims here. Where we mention battery life, we say which review it came from.

Words to know: MSRP is the maker's official list price. VRR (variable refresh rate) lets the screen match the game's frame rate, so motion looks smoother. Wh is battery size.

A note on prices: memory and storage shortages pushed many handheld prices up in 2026. Each price below says where it came from and when. Always check the store before you buy.

Steam Deck OLED

Best for: beginners and anyone who wants a console-like experience with their Steam library.

The Steam Deck runs SteamOS, which Valve built just for this device. It turns on and sleeps like a console, and Steam's "Steam Deck Verified" labels tell you how well a game runs before you buy. Its chip is the oldest in this guide, and its screen is lower resolution than the others, so newer games often need lower settings. The 1TB model adds anti-glare etched glass.

See our Steam Deck device page.

ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X

Best for: Windows players, especially Xbox and PC Game Pass users.

ROG Xbox Ally

ROG Xbox Ally X

Both run Windows 11 with a full-screen Xbox app that makes it feel more like a console. They play games from Steam, Epic, Game Pass and other PC stores. Engadget's review got just under 3.5 hours from the Ally X playing Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 at medium settings and full brightness. The Ally X is much more powerful than the base model.

There is also a new ROG Xbox Ally X20 with a 7.4-inch OLED screen, for $1,299 (ASUS press release, Oct 15, 2026). Read our ROG Xbox Ally X20 news and X20 setup guide.

Lenovo Legion Go 2

Best for: people who want the biggest, best screen and don't mind a heavy device.

Reviewers praise the big OLED screen. Tom's Guide also found the battery life poor and the device expensive. In Engadget's test, it lasted about 30 minutes less than the ROG Xbox Ally X in the same game.

See our Legion Go 2 device page.

Lenovo Legion Go S (SteamOS)

Best for: SteamOS with a bigger 8-inch screen for less than the Legion Go 2.

The Legion Go S was the first handheld from a company other than Valve to ship with SteamOS. Tom's Guide calls it the better pick for budget-minded buyers compared with the Legion Go 2.

See our Legion Go S device page.

MSI Claw 8 AI+

Best for: Windows players who care most about battery life.

This is the only Intel-powered handheld in this guide. In PC Gamer's gaming battery test it lasted 129 minutes, one minute more than the older ROG Ally X. The Verge called it the best battery life of any handheld in all but the lightest games. Reviewers criticized MSI's own control software.

How to choose

Budget

If you mainly want emulation and smaller games, an Android handheld can cost much less. See our Best Android Handhelds 2026 guide.

Windows or SteamOS?

Emulation or PC games?

All of these handhelds can play PC games and run desktop emulators. For newer, demanding PC games, choose a stronger chip like the Ryzen Z2 Extreme or Core Ultra 7 258V. For older PC games, indie games and emulation, the Steam Deck or base ROG Xbox Ally is usually enough. Check our compatibility reports for specific games.
