ROG Xbox Ally X20 or Odin 3 Portal?

One is a Windows gaming PC you can hold. The other is an Android handheld built for emulation. Both have a 1080p, 120Hz OLED screen around 7 inches, but they're very different machines at very different prices. Here's a fair look, based on the makers' specs and reviewer reports.

The short answer

Heads-up

Nobody on our team has used either device yet. The X20 section relies on ASUS and published reviews; the Portal section relies on AYN's own specs and news reports, since it hasn't shipped.

Battery numbers aren't directly comparable: Wh (X20) and mAh (Portal) are measured differently. Neither maker publishes an official play-time figure.

Price

This is the biggest difference. The X20 is $1,299, more than three times the Portal's $399 early-bird starting price. Even the top Portal (Max, $549 early bird) is under half the X20's price. ASUS still sells the non-OLED ROG Xbox Ally X ($999) and ROG Xbox Ally ($599), per its press release, if you want Windows for less.

Games each can play

X20 (Windows): it runs PC games natively. That means Steam, Xbox Game Pass PC, Epic, GOG, EA, Ubisoft and Battle.net, including new AAA releases. BGR measured around 30-32 fps in games like Gears of War: E-Day on low to medium presets. Emulation works too through Windows apps; XDA used RetroBat. Some online games with strict anti-cheat may not work on any handheld; check each game.

Odin 3 Portal (Android): it plays Android games from the Play Store and is built for emulation, from retro consoles up through PS2, GameCube and Switch emulation. It uses the same chip as the Odin 3, so expect Odin 3-level performance. PC games are possible only through translation apps like Winlator or GameHub, which work with some games but not as smoothly or reliably as a real Windows PC.

Our guides

Ease of use

X20: it boots into the controller-friendly Xbox full screen experience, and The Independent found it relatively easy to set up in Xbox mode. But it's still Windows underneath: XDA mentions updates from several different places and sleep that isn't always reliable.

Portal: Android feels like a phone, with simple updates and a Play Store. But emulation means setting up emulators, game folders and sometimes GPU drivers yourself. AYN ships it with no games preinstalled.

Battery

X20: reviewers report about 2 hours in most cases (XDA) and 2-3 hours in demanding games on Turbo (BGR, The Independent). Lighter games last longer.

Portal: no battery tests exist yet. It has a 9,000mAh battery, up from the Odin 3's 8,000mAh, with the same chip, so it should last at least a bit longer than an Odin 3. That's our inference, not a measurement.

Size and weight

The X20 is much bigger and heavier: 756g and up to 51mm thick at the grips, vs 450g and 17.2mm for the Portal. Reviewers say the X20's rubberized grips make it comfortable, though The Independent noted it feels quite heavy. The Portal is far easier to slip into a bag.

Pick this if...

ROG Xbox Ally X20

  • You want to play current PC games and Game Pass on the go.
  • You already have a Steam or PC library.
  • You want something reviewed and in stock today.
  • Price isn't the main concern. (XDA notes it keeps the same Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme chip, 24GB RAM and 1TB SSD as the $999 Ally X.)

Odin 3 Portal

  • You mostly play retro games through emulation, plus Android games.
  • You want something lighter and pocketable.
  • You want to spend under $550.
  • You're fine waiting until early November and buying before reviews are out.
