CapyPS5 is an early PS5 emulator for Android, and a few games already hit 60 FPS on the Odin 3
PS5 emulation has reached Android, at least in alpha form. CapyPS5 is a new emulator from Ghael, the developer behind the Lemon Switch emulator. Version 0.0.1 came out on October 22 as a free APK, and the project says its source is public under GPL-2.0. CapyPS5 is built on KytyPS5, an open-source PS5 translation layer for Windows and Linux that grew out of InoriRus's original Kyty project. It runs the game's x86-64 code on ARM with the FEX JIT. Android Authority and several Brazilian emulation sites have covered it, and the developer has posted video demos.
How it works
A PS5 is basically an x86-64 PC with an AMD GPU, and a phone has neither, so CapyPS5 translates every layer. FEX recompiles game code to ARM64 as it runs. The game's GPU command buffers (PM4) are replayed through Vulkan, and RDNA shaders are recompiled to SPIR-V and cached for each game. System libraries such as video, audio, saves and controllers are reimplemented from scratch (HLE). The project says no Sony code is used.
What runs today
All of the developer's numbers come from an AYN Odin 3 (Snapdragon 8 Elite, Adreno 830). Small 2D games are the clear success:- 60 FPS: Dead Cells, Blasphemous, Animal Well, Greak: Memories of Azur, The Binding of Isaac: Repentance, and Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom (about 60).
- Playable but slower: Rogue Prince of Persia at about 30 FPS with occasional bad frames, and Unbound: Worlds Apart at about 20. MARVEL Cosmic Invasion is listed as working, and the developer's video shows it at 60 FPS.
- Slow: Born of Bread (UE5) at 16–28 FPS at 25% resolution, with missing floors in some rooms. Astérix & Obélix XXL2 runs at about 20 FPS, Earth Defense Force at 14–16, Guri at about 8, Stray at 4–7, Little Nightmares Enhanced Edition at 4–6 with no ray tracing, and Castlevania: Belmont's Curse at about 4 with very long loads.
- Doesn't work: Sonic Origins Plus closes at start, and Sackboy: A Big Adventure loads forever.
What you need
- Android 12 or later on a 64-bit (arm64) device.
- A Vulkan 1.3 GPU. Only the Adreno 830 has been tested with its system driver. On other Adreno chips, such as the 750 in the Galaxy S24 Ultra, the app can download a Turnip driver for you under Settings → Graphics. Mali support through PanVK is experimental, so expect problems.
- 12 GB of RAM or more is recommended.
- Your own PS5 game dumps: a folder containing
eboot.binandsce_sys/. No BIOS, firmware or keys are needed, and none are included.
Keep expectations in check
This is a v0.0.1 test build, and the developer says it's meant for testing and bug reports. Big PS5 releases are nowhere close to playable on a phone or handheld. Treat CapyPS5 as an impressive first step on high-end Snapdragon hardware, not a way to play your PS5 library on the go. When a game closes, the app saves a log to CapyPS5/logs/, and the developer asks for those logs on the project Discord.
Watch out for fake APKs
Fake "PS5 emulator" downloads loaded with survey walls and malware are common, and CapyPS5's sudden attention makes it an easy target for impostors. The developer says CapyPS5 is free and doesn't need firmware or keys. If a site asks you to pay, finish a survey or download a "BIOS" or key pack, it isn't the real project. Get the APK only from the project's official site, capyps5.org, and the links in our emulators directory, and use only games you dumped from your own console. If you try it on a handheld, send us a compatibility report. Sources: Android Authority, Oficina da Net, Mobile Gamer and the project's own compatibility list.
