Banjo-Tooie runs natively on Android with Tooie Recompiled 1.0

2026-10-23 · By Overclocked Joe

Rare's 2000 N64 platformer Banjo-Tooie now has a native Android port. Tooie Recompiled, from a developer going by Frostie, put out its first public release, v1.0.0, on October 23. It's open source under the GPL 3.0, and the README is clear that it isn't affiliated with Mr-Wiseguy's Banjo: Recompiled project.

How it works

It's not an N64 emulator. The port is built with N64Recomp, which translates the game's N64 code into C that's compiled for ARM64 phones and handhelds, and draws with the RT64 renderer. It credits the BanjoRecomp front end and the Banjo-Tooie decompilation.

What's in 1.0

What you need

Your own USA Banjo-Tooie ROM in .z64 format, a 64-bit ARM device on Android 7.0 or newer with a Vulkan driver that supports RT64's features, and a physical controller. You pick the ROM with Android's file picker and the app keeps a private copy. No ROM is included, and Overclocked doesn't host or link game files.

The only device it's been tested on so far is the AYN Odin 2 Portal (Adreno 740), where the developer uses the Manual 60 graphics setting. Known issues include thin lines during Jiggy challenges, a brief screen shift when dialogue starts, and some stutter in the intro and demo, and a full playthrough hasn't been confirmed yet. An update checker is ready for the next release, so 1.0.0 needs one manual update to get it. Grab the APK from the project's GitHub release; it's now in the Overclocked ports directory. Today's other directory updates bring GT3 Revisited 0.3.0, Eternal Sonata: Reprise 1.3.4, Chupathingy 0.8.0f and a 0.5.0 preview of mamcjr's Link's Awakening port.
