Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks gets a native Android port recompiled from the Xbox version
Midway's 2005 beat-'em-up Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks now has an unofficial native Android port. Shaolin Monks for Android, by RanggaCasper, takes the original Xbox version and statically recompiles its x86 code ahead of time into C++ with TGP482's XboxXBE-Recomp, then builds it for arm64. Graphics go through Vulkan and input and audio through SDL3, so there's no emulator in the loop. Version 0.2 landed on October 21 as a 30 MB APK.
What's in it
- A full on-screen Xbox pad, including Black and White buttons, with a default or low-trigger layout, opacity and size sliders, and a drag-to-place editor.
- Any SDL3-supported controller with rumble, which hides the touch controls, plus a rebindable keyboard.
- Render resolution from 20% to 200% of screen height instead of the original 640x480, V-Sync, frame-rate caps, an FPS counter and anisotropic filtering.
- English, French, German, Italian or Spanish game text, and mono, stereo or 5.1 audio.
Status
It's an early work in progress. The developer has a gameplay video running at 60 FPS on a Xiaomi Pad 7, but the README says it hasn't been played through on a device yet. The unlockable Mortal Kombat II and the bonus demo for The Suffering run as separate programs on the disc, and the Android host can't switch to them yet, so picking either closes the app. There's no widescreen, frame-rate unlock or other game patches yet; the picture stays 4:3 and letterboxed.
What you need
Android 10 or newer on arm64, a GPU with a Vulkan 1.1 driver (Adreno 6xx or newer, Mali-G7x or newer, or Xclipse), 4 GB of RAM and about 4 GB of storage. You supply the game from your own Xbox disc, either the .iso or default.xbe with the rest of the disc files, copied into a ShaolinMonks folder on internal storage or an SD card. No game files are included. If you try it on a Retroid, AYN or Anbernic handheld, send us a compatibility report. Source: Shaolin Monks for Android on GitHub.
