Gran Turismo 3 gets GT3 Revisited, an open-source engine rebuild with an Android APK

2026-10-21 · By Overclocked Joe

Polyphony's 2001 PS2 classic Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec now runs natively on Android without a PS2 emulator. GT3 Revisited, by matt-pulsipher, is an MIT-licensed reimplementation of the game's engine for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and Meta Quest. It has none of the original code. Instead it reads your own disc image at runtime and decodes the cars, tracks, movies and music from it as it goes. Version 0.1.0 came out on October 18 and 0.2.0 followed on October 20 with a free gt3r-android.apk for Android 7.0 and newer.

What's in it

How it runs

Android Authority tried it on a Retroid Pocket G2 (Snapdragon G2 Gen 2, 8 GB RAM) and reported what looked like a steady 60 FPS, with plenty of touch-control options. Version 0.2.0 makes lapped cars finish when the leader does, times laps and race positions the way the original did, and adds the Meta Quest VR build. Online play needs 0.2.0 on every player's copy. Only the US NTSC discs (SCUS-97102 and the PBPX-95503 bundle disc) are verified so far; other regions haven't been tested. The project was built with Claude AI assistance, so expect early-project bugs.

What you need

An arm64 (or x86_64) Android device on Android 7.0 or newer and an .iso made from your own copy of Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec. No game files are included. On first launch, tap Open disc image and pick the file. The app reads it through Android's file picker, so it needs no storage permission, but the ISO has to stay on your device or SD card. If you try it on a Retroid, AYN or Anbernic handheld, send us a compatibility report. Source: GT3 Revisited on GitHub, via Android Authority.
