GoldenEye 007 runs natively on Android with an unofficial Project Midas port
How it works
This isn't an emulator. The GoldenEye decompilation project rebuilt Rare's 1997 game as readable C code, and Project Midas compiles that code for modern systems with new rendering, audio and input layers. The Android port compiles the same code for ARM and draws it with an OpenGL ES 3.0 renderer through SDL2, so it gets the PC version's options instead of an emulator's.
Features
- Touch controls: a full on-screen pad with two sticks, a D-pad, action buttons, the Z trigger and Start. A small HIDE/PAD pill at the top of the screen hides it when you use physical controls.
- Controllers: Retroid Pocket built-in controls and Bluetooth or USB pads from Xbox, PlayStation and 8BitDo work out of the box.
- PC port options: widescreen, custom FOV, 3D resolution scaling, MSAA, anisotropic filtering up to 16x, several texture filters, and 60 FPS or unlocked frame rates.
- Gameplay tweaks: Steady Scope, Aim Lock, Always Crosshair, a mission timer and fixes like Shoot-Through and True Enemy Rockets, plus separate music, sound and stereo sliders.
What you need
Your own legally dumped GoldenEye 007 (USA) N64 ROM. On first launch the app asks for storage access, then looks for the ROM in common folders (Download, ROMs, roms/n64 and SD cards) and checks its size and SHA-1 hash. If it can't find it, you can pick the file yourself. The APK contains none of the game's data, and Overclocked doesn't host or link game files.
Things to know
The developer tested it on a Retroid Pocket running Android 13, so performance on other phones and handhelds may vary. It's based on upstream 1.0.1, so it doesn't yet include the Weapon FOV, HUD scale and high-frame-rate fixes from the PC version's 1.0.2b update on October 23. It's a fan port in a personal fork rather than an official Project Midas release, so treat it as a work in progress. Download it from the fork's GitHub releases. Project Midas for Android is now in the Overclocked ports directory.
