OVERDynasty Warriors 5 gets a native Android port, recompiled from the original Xbox
Koei's 2005 musou brawler Dynasty Warriors 5 now runs natively on Android. DW5 Android, from developer datfooldive, went public on October 24 with a beta in the morning (UTC) and its first stable release, v1.0, a few hours later. datfooldive also contributes to Black for Android, and the two ports share the same toolchain.
How it works
It isn't an Xbox emulator. The game's x86 code in default.xbe is statically recompiled to C++ with the XboxXBE-Recomp SDK, then built for arm64 Android with the SDK's portable runtime. Drawing goes through Vulkan, and windowing, input and audio through SDL3. The Android version grew out of the developer's Linux port, and the source is on GitHub.
Features
- Touch controls laid out like the original Duke pad: a left stick, drag-to-turn camera, the X/Y/B/A diamond for attack, charge, musou and jump, plus Start, Back and the triggers.
- Controller support with rumble, and a keyboard works as player one's pad.
- An in-game settings panel (the gear icon) for resolution from 33% to 100%, SMAA or MSAA 2x/4x, glow, 1x to 4x draw distance, automatic frame skip, V-Sync and an FPS counter. The game runs at a 60 fps cap, since its timing is built around 60.
What's in v1.0
The beta only drew a picture on the developer's own Mali-G57; everyone else got sound and gameplay over a black screen. v1.0 fixes that with safer Vulkan paths for Adreno and other Mali GPUs, borrowed from Black for Android's tested renderer, only uses linear filtering where the GPU supports it, and shows a message naming the failed step and your GPU if the renderer can't start.
What you need
An arm64 device on Android 10 or newer with a Vulkan 1.1 driver, and your own copy of the USA Xbox release, either as a disc image (.iso) or as default.xbe with its data files. Copy it into a DW5 folder on internal storage or your SD card and the game starts as soon as it finds the files. No game data is included, and Overclocked doesn't host or link game files.
It's a day-one release that's only been widely tested by its developer, so expect rough edges. Grab the APK from the project's GitHub release; DW5 Android is now in the Overclocked ports directory. Today's other directory updates bring Black for Android v1.7.0, Knuckles' Chaotix Recompiled 0.15.1, Tooie Recompiled v1.0.1 and ICO 0.8.6.
