Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 gets a native widescreen Android port with Bigodão
Wario's first starring role now runs natively on Android. Bigodão, by Brazilian developer GABRIELNNK, is a static recompilation of Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, Nintendo's 1994 Game Boy platformer. The game's code is translated ahead of time into C with arcanite24's gb-recompiled and built against the port's own runtime, so there's no emulator in between. Since 1.0.0 the port also draws the game itself rather than going through an emulated Game Boy video chip. Builds are out for Android (arm64 APK), Windows and Linux, and the project is MIT-licensed with full source on GitHub.
What it adds
- True 16:9 widescreen, on by default in levels and on the map. Screens the game only draws at the original size, such as boss rooms, get black or, since 1.1.1, blurred side bars.
- HD mod packs: backgrounds and sprites can be repainted at 2x, 4x or higher and loaded as
.o2rfiles, with tools to cut and pack them. - Music mods that swap the soundtrack for OGG tracks while the original sound effects keep playing.
- On Android: an on-screen gamepad, physical controller support and the system file picker, so built-in handheld controls on a Retroid, AYN or Anbernic should just work.
- An experimental 120 fps mode, new in 1.1.1.
Fast releases
Releases went from 1.0.0 on October 17 to 1.1.1 on October 20, and the developer posted it to r/decomps on October 21. Version 1.1.1 also makes the launcher easier to read. The project calls itself a study of static recompilation, and according to decomps.net the README doesn't say whether the whole game has been played through on the port, so expect rough edges.
What you need
Your own Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 ROM, dumped from your own cartridge and matching the SHA-256 hash in the README, plus korxo's fan-made DX colour patch, version 1.2. The port applies the patch in memory and leaves your ROM file untouched. No game files are included. Bigodão is now in our ports directory; if you try it on a handheld, send us a compatibility report. Sources: decomps.net and Bigodao on GitHub.
